K-12 Education

We have extensive experience supporting K–12 projects ranging from individual buildings to full campus-style developments.

Schools function as mini campuses, with classrooms, administrative spaces, cafeterias, gyms, outdoor areas, and community spaces. Each has a unique design and technical requirements.

We work closely with architects and school district staff to support functional layouts, code compliance, and efficient coordination. Our collaboration helps align structural systems with building use while addressing civil needs such as utilities, vehicle and pedestrian access, ADA requirements, and secure access points. We also understand the unique approval processes and regulations that accompany school district projects, which often extend beyond local jurisdictional requirements.

By combining technical expertise with a collaborative approach, we help architects and owners deliver well-coordinated K–12 facilities.

The Foundry

S. A. Miro, Inc. is providing civil engineering services for the development of a new Pre-K through 8th Grade school within the Foundry Development Area. Our work includes site layout, utility coordination, grading strategies, stormwater collection and conveyance, and planning for vehicular and pedestrian circulation to support a safe and functional campus.

The approximate 17-acre vacant site will accommodate a 120,000-square-foot facility designed for 1,000 students. Surrounded on three sides by public streets and bordered by single-family residences to the north, the site will include standard school amenities such as a basic sports field, playgrounds, trash and recycling enclosures, and bike racks.

Vehicular access is provided via surrounding streets, with dedicated bus and student drop-off lanes, and parking areas for teachers and visitors. Pedestrian access will be distributed along the site perimeter to accommodate students arriving from multiple directions.

Utility infrastructure is coordinated to support both domestic and fire service, with connections to existing public mains in adjacent streets. A new looped water main is anticipated to ensure sufficient fire hydrant coverage, with domestic and fire service lines connecting to the looped system.

Sanitary sewer service will tie into an existing main via a private service line, and a grease trap will be sized and located in coordination with the plumbing engineer. Stormwater management will rely on a regional detention facility, with S. A. Miro, Inc. designing on-site collection and conveyance systems to meet regulatory requirements.

The site’s significant topography, with a slope of approximately 58 feet from north to south, will require careful grading. While retaining walls are expected, this proposal includes only the layout of walls (horizontal and vertical), with structural design anticipated under a Design-Build approach by the contractor unless otherwise specified.

By providing a coordinated civil engineering framework early in the project, S. A. Miro, Inc. ensured that the Foundry Development School site would support safe access, functional utilities, and flexible infrastructure to meet both immediate and long-term needs.
Horizon High School Renovation
LOCATION: Thornton, CO

OWNER: Adams 12 Five Star Schools

S. A. Miro, Inc. provided structural engineering services for the Horizon High School Renovation project in Thornton, CO. Our team reviewed the existing structure to ensure adequate capacity to both support operable partitions and theater motorized rigging. We also reviewed the adjustments required for the partition walls in the Auditorium. Finally, our team reviewed the existing structure to ensure adequate capacity to support additional loads and approved additional openings in the floor slabs and structural walls for new MEP routing and
reinforcement of the existing structure.
Evergreen Middle School Expansion
LOCATION: Evergreen, CO

Our team provided civil engineering services and master plan for the the Jefferson County School District Evergreen Middle School Expansion project. This included a schematic layout of improvements along with a grading and utility plan. The project required careful coordination with the design team and local AHJ.
